The Republic of Turkey filed plans this week for a 32-story edifice that will house its consulate in New York. Located on First Avenue, not far from the United Nations, the Turkevi Center, as it’s called, isn’t super tall, like some other buildings going up around town, but in it’s own way, it is as architecturally distinctive as its midcentury-era neighbor.

Its curving facade, inspired, according to architects Perkins Eastman, by the Turkish crescent, rises 561 feet from a podium wrapped in a screen perforated with motifs that recall decorative elements from Islamic architecture.

A similar scrim decorates the lobby. You’ll be able to see it for yourself when the Turkevi Center opens in 2018.
